Solution Focused Listening

This workshop will focus on how you use your listening skills to observe the talents and qualities in clients through simple questions. You will leave feeling great about yourself. One of the hardest things about work in a solution focused way is to give up our tendency to hypothesis about what's wrong with our clients and our desire to give advice. This is aften happening in our minds while we are supposed to be listening to our clients - in reality we are caught up in our own thoughts. The workshop will give participants a powerful experience af what happens when you listen for talents and qualities and help to improve the ability to listen from a solution focused perspective. You will also learn how to give 'evidence-based' compliments.

Making cities for people – one question at a time

In 2015 I set up a small research project for which I trained six urban planning professionals (working for academia, private design offices and public authorities) in solution focused coaching. They were offered this training without any other obligation or instruction on how to use this whatsoever. We are currently assembling their experiences into a paper that should be presented at the 15th AESOP Planning & Complexity Workgroup Meeting, 12-14th April 2017, Ghent, Belgium.

1. that urban planners and their clients (policy makers, civil servants, local communities, …) could also benefit from truly acknowledging the limitations of their understanding while practicing urban planning in a complex world,

2.    that clever urban planning is also much less about clever urban planners figuring out solutions for clients’ problems and much more about planners and their clients cleverly working together in clever ways,

3.    and that a solution focused approach offers planners and their clients a very simple and effective way to achieve such a clever co-operation by putting more emphasis on observing (what’s happening between the noses) instead of thinking (what’s happening between one’s ears).

Growing Local Economies with Solution Focused Practice

Every community and every resident has resources.  By seeking what is there that is working already, we can help people to start and to grow their own businesses using the SFP based Enterprise Coaching model.  Participants will experience the application of SFP in a way that helps to create self-employment and wealth in local communities, and that works well in hard to reach and high social needs areas in particular.
